Jasmyn is the new solo project created by former singer-songwriter and frontwoman of the critically acclaimed band Weaves. After years of non-stop touring, she was feeling burnt out and in need of change, so she pivoted, left the band and her hometown of Toronto, in search of a slower pace and some room to breathe. Although unsure what to do next, the pandemic forced her to get quiet and listen to her own desires. Finding herself suddenly in a quieter city and amongst big change, she took long walks and slowly starting to pick up the pieces and write new music.
As these songs began to develop, she realized that there was a body of work that sounded like the beginnings of an album. Although nervous to go out on her own after almost 10 years of playing in Weaves, she thought it was the right time to finally release music under her own name – Jasmyn.
In what seemed like a whirlwind of events, she was quickly signed to make an album with Anti Records (sister label to Epitaph Records) in the Summer of 2020 after sending them some demos. Still unable to leave the house, the label connected Jasmyn with Grammy nominated, Los Angeles-based, Producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten), and the two began remotely collaborating on the body of work she had compiled over months of being in lockdown. In the Spring of 2021, Jasmyn flew to LA to record with Congleton, exploring themes of finding patterns in life and how to perhaps change one’s path – storylines prominent throughout her debut solo album.
During the Summer of 2022 Jasmyn released her debut solo record “In the Wild” and embarked on a worldwide tour throughout the U.S. and Europe. She was also then handpicked to join as opener for iconic Canadian band Broken Social Scene on their 20th Anniversary tour of “You Forgot It In the People” throughout America.
Over the last decade, Jasmyn has been a fixture in the Canadian music scene and has toured her music internationally (Glastonbury Festival, High Water Music Festival, End of the Road Festival etc). As a songwriter and front woman to bands throughout her career, she has received support from the likes of Rolling Stone Magazine, Elton John’s Rocket Hour, NPR, The Guardian and Pitchfork. While playing in Weaves Jasmyn also received two Polaris Music Prize shortlist nominations, two JUNO Award nominations for Alternative Album of the Year and two SOCAN Song-writing Prize nominations.
With a goal of creating more opportunities for bipoc artists within the music industry, she has always pushed herself to be creative and an active advocate for change. Jasmyn is a powerhouse singer-songwriter and has established herself as one of Canada’s most memorable voices over her career. She is excited to keep writing and moving forward in this new chapter as a musician.
